Curious Expedition tries to answer big questions, such as: what would happen if Charles Darwin encountered a velociraptor after being hunted by tigers?
Curious Expedition is a roguelike expedition simulation set in the late 19th century. Together with famous historical personalities, players will venture on unprecedented expeditions to regions never explored before for fame, science and treasures. They will put on their pith helmets and khakis and make their way through a lush, procedurally generated world full of wonder and mystery.
Our first commercial release was selected by Rock, Paper, Shotgun as “Best Roguelike Game of 2016” and won the “Deutscher Entwicklerpreis” (German developer award) as Best Indie game in 2015. It has sold more than 300.000 copies to date across all platforms.
The game is available now on Steam, Itch.io, Humble Store, GOG and on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox. The console versions are published by Thunderful.

- Besides famous personalities like Nikola Tesla, Marie Curie or Harriet Tubman, there are lots of secret explorers to be found through entering codes.
- We had a long list of alternative names for the game. Here’s our top 5: Adventurous, Rogue Expedition, The Adventurous Spirit, The Extraordinary Expedition, Spirit of Adventure.
- There’s a running gag about this game creating a bitter rivalry between Maschinen-Mensch and Abbey Games, makers of Renowned Explorers. In fact, we truly appreciate each other’s games and even made a bundle of our games together, accompanied by a very silly video.
- Our first game went through many iterations. At one point, collecting butterflies was the main goal.
